By analyzing major works of English fiction ranging from Bunyan, Fielding, Scott, and Thackeray to Joyce and Beckett, renowned critic Wolfgang Iser here provides a framework for a theory … Wolfgang Iser puts forward a different model even it has the same name of -the implied reader.‖ In The Act of Reading, Iser defines -the implied reader‖ as: -If, then, we are to try and understand the effects caused and the responses elicited by literary works, we must allow for the reader's presence without in any way predetermining his character or his historical situation.

Whenever we read meaning in a text, we read meaning into a text and out of the text. Therefore, while reading meaning we have to consider two things – the actual text & the actions involved in responding to the text. Iser defines the implied reader as: If, then, we are to try and understand t he effects caused and the responses eli cited by liter ary works, we mu st allow for the reader’s presence without in 1978-08-01 2016-11-08 Iser's focus is on the theme of discovery, whereby the reader is given the chance to recognize the deficiencies of his own existence and the suggested solutions to counterbalance them. The content and form of this discovery is the calculated response of the reader -- the implied reader. According to Wolfgang Iser, “an implied reader is a hypothetical figure who is likely to get most of what the author intended.” When an author writes a book or article they do so with certain readers in mind and they believe that those known as the implied reader will understand or appreciate the metaphors and ironies which the author as written.
